COUNTDOWN TO NATIONALS - 7 WEEKS!

Trailer - Women in Sport: Local Success Stories 6-Part Video Series

The “Women in Sport: Local Success Stories” is a6-Part Video Series, created by 4th year Bachelor of Physical Education & Coaching (BPEC) Degree student Hannah Sanvido. The video series was created for two reasons:

  1. to celebrate and educate people on the successes and challenges facing girls and women in sport and physical activity today.
  2. to act as a “Countdown” to Wednesday November 7th at 5:00pm when the Douglas College Women’s Soccer Team take the field to represent BC in the CCAA Women’s Nationals Soccer Tournament.

One “Women in Sport: Local Success Stories” video, will be released and archived here on this page every Wednesday starting on September 26th, 2018.

The videos are 4-6 minutes long and are informative and appropriate for all ages. We encourage teachers and coaches to take time in your classes or practices to play the videos and start the discussion on empowering women and girls. Take advantage of Canada’s best soccer coaches and athletes competing in Coquitlam, BC by organizing a fieldtrip or outing for your class, team or family to watch elite female soccer “live and local”.

Who

Rochelle Grayson (Vancouver, BC) who is the Digital Strategy and Media Consultant for the Canadian Advancement of Women in Sport & Physical Activity (CAWWS).

Topic

speaking on diversity with female athletes and organizations, challenges to the empowerment of women and girls as well as how to use business and marketing to increase women and sport in the media.

Who

Garaline Tomahwak is a former Douglas College student, who is now working as an Aboriginal Youth Worker and is an Athlete with the Canadian Native National Championships.

speaking on her experience with race and culture and how she wants to promote and encourage healthy living on First Nations reservations through sport.

Kate Rossiter is a Criminologist, the co-organizer of Queer Van Soccer and a long-time soccer athlete.

Speaking about the LGBTQ+ community within sport, what her organization is doing and how they could be even more representative and inclusive.

Who

Vale Savege is a 77 year old Slow Pitch Softball Athlete, a BC 55 + Games competitor in basketball and volleyball for over 12 years and is an inductee into the BC Volleyball Hall of Fame and the BC Hall of Fame as an official.

Speaking on her journey from a young active girl to a highly competitive female as both an athlete and a leader in sport.

Who

Mari Klassen is a deaf athlete, the Captain of the 2018 Canadian National Deaf Volleyball Women's team, a Team Canada member for 12 years and is currently a Sign Language Instructor at Vancouver Community College.

Topic

Speaking to represent the deaf community and deaf sport and to discuss challenges that deaf individuals may face as well as advantages that they have within sport.

Who

Caitlin Danielson is a Douglas College Student-Athlete in 2nd year Criminology and Samantha Kell is a Douglas College Student-Athlete in 4th year Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching (BPEC); Samantha has been the Royals Soccer captain for three years.

Topic

They will be speaking about their start in sport, their role models in the sporting world and what it means to be competing in a National Championship.

Watch all 6 videos and create an environment of excitement as we countdown the 6 weeks till CCAA Women’s Soccer Nationals begin.

Motivate & Learn

Each video is 4-6 minutes long, featuring local women sharing their sport and leadership journey. Videos provide strategies for success and an opinion sharing on what we can do to change the negative trend of girls/women NOT being physically active and NOT advancing as leaders in sport.

Participate & Win

  • to participate viewers must find one hidden letter in each video (total of 6)
  • unscramble the 6 letters into a word
  • attend the 1st Douglas College Soccer game Nov 7th at 5:00pm
  • enter “mystery word” on ballot at the front entry gate for a chance to win a PRIZE at halftime
