Nature returns to its roots in a new contemporary exhibit at Douglas College

Starting December 1, Douglas College will be showcasing sculptor Michael Ray’s contemporary collection of sculptures that evoke the lush, briny essence of the Northwest Coast.

The B.C.-raised artist uses locally sourced wood, steel and stone to sculpt the nature of the Northwest Coast based on his childhood memories of the region. His artwork features natural figures like coho salmon, Canada geese and sturgeon in smooth, seamless textures. The exhibit will also give audiences a glimpse into Ray’s process as a seasoned sculptor through photography and video.

“In my teen years, I spent summers sailing the Salish Sea with my father. I focus on this area in my art, because I grew up surrounded by this nature,” he said. “I sense that the local wood and stone embody the spirit of the Northwest.”

Inspired by Emily Carr’s impressionism and Bill Reid’s smooth, modernist forms, Ray hopes that visitors to this exhibit will see beyond the creatures he depicts to also appreciate his signature art style.

"The Amelia Douglas Gallery is delighted to exhibit this selection of sculptures that represent the majestic wildlife of the land that surrounds us,” says Jacci Wintermans, Arts Events Officer and Amelia Douglas Gallery Co-Chair.

Ray’s work has been featured in galleries across B.C., including the Ranger Station Art Gallery in Harrison Hot Springs, the Hope Arts Gallery and the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. His carvings have also been displayed at the P.N.E. and received the “Best in Show” award for wood sculpture.

An opening reception will be held on December 1 at 5pm, followed by an artist’s talk at 7pm. The exhibit will run until January 3, 2023.
