Veterinary Technology grads exceed average national and international exam scores

Veterinary Technology (VTEC) grads at Douglas College once again outperformed their peers on both the national and international stage.

On last year’s Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE), the qualifying board exam for Registered Veterinary Technologists in Canada and the United States, Douglas College examinees surpassed the overall average score by nearly 12 percent.

“We’re so proud of our graduates for their hard work in achieving these results. They join a long history of Douglas grads achieving above-average exam scores,” said Brian Chapell, Dean of Science and Technology.

The results are on par with previous results for Douglas grads, who consistently get top marks on the VTNE. Average scores have been at least 10 percent higher than the overall average on every exam over the past seven years.

The annual exam features nine sections, including categories such as diagnostic imaging, surgical nursing and dentistry. As in other years, Douglas grads scored at least five percent higher than the overall averages in each category.

Since 2007, the VTEC program’s partnerships with local animal shelters, rescue organizations and farms have provided students with extensive training working with animals, both on- and off-campus. That practical experience combined with a rigorous academic curriculum ensures students are well-prepared for the exam.

“The year-over-year success of our grads on their qualifying board exam demonstrates the value of the intensive applied learning instructors provide,” said Dr. Pauline Chow, program coordinator. “Students are more than prepared to thrive in their future careers.”
