Learning Activities

The functional-communicative approach is used.

Classroom activities may include: presentation of material by the instructor, practice in pairs and small groups, listening comprehension, audio-visual presentations, discussion of reading materials, task-based conversation practice, and student presentations.

Conversation in small groups with a Native Language Assistant.

Course Description
This course is designed to further aural comprehension, strengthen oral expression and develop reading and writing skills for students who have completed MODL 2271. This course also aims to provide a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. Japanese is used in class almost exclusively.
Course Content

Systematic, in-depth study of:

  1. Syntactic structures
  2. Lexicon
  3. Stylistic nuances
  4. Aspects of Japanese culture
Learning Outcomes

The student will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in Japanese at the intermediate level in:

  1. Aural comprehension of authentic language situations.
  2. Reading comprehension of materials written in a combination of hiragana, katakana, and a minimum of 300 kanji 
  3. Speech delivery, such as using honorific and humble styles of speech, giving commands and instructions,supporting opinions and defending a point of view. 
  4. Written expression, such as guided composition, using hiragana, katakana, and kanji.
  5. Understanding target cultures.

Written Evaluations

Oral Evaluations
(May include but not limited to oral tests, oral presentations, listening comprehension, conversation lab, attendance, preparation, class participation, Final Oral Exam)

No single evaluation will be worth more than 20%.

  • An intermediate-level Japanese textbook, such as: Banno et al. GENKI: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese II.
  • The Japan Times.
  • Accompanying workbook and audio materials.
