Course Description
This course provides an introduction to the wide range of common retail financial products and services offered by Canada’s financial institutions. After a brief discussion on the evolution of money and the Canadian monetary system, the course covers a detailed review of those primary and supplemental deposit, credit, and special products and services available to individuals and businesses through the financial institutions, supported by an integrative model approach for each.
Course Content
  1. Evaluation of function of money and relationship between money and client’s needs.
  2. Recognize and explain supplementary products related to deposit transactions.
  3. Differentiate between short and long-term products and use of financial institution credit.
  4. Relationship between banking and insurance; insurance products and customer needs.
  5. Tools of short and long term financing; types of loans; use and need for personal credit.
  6. Factors that differentiate investments; investment decisions and client’s objectives
  7. Forecasting financial needs for retirement; RRSP. RRIF and annuity products.
  8. Financial institutions and the needs of small business.
Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the successful student should be able to:

  1. Discuss and understand the demand for money and financial products and services
  2. Differentiate between various supplementary products:  Cheques, Transfers, PAP and Direct Deposits
  3. Identify banking and non-banking savings products.
  4. Discuss and evaluate insurance products
  5. Demonstrate use and function of loans and borrowed money
  6. Discuss and differentiate commonly used products for long-term investing
  7. Evaluate and discuss benefits of retirement planning products
  8. Identify and compare specialized financial products directed towards business needs
