Overview
The following global ideas guide the design and delivery of this course:
- Analysis of organizational styles (for profit, not for profit, and public sector).
- Current management and leadership issues within private, non-profit and public community-based organizations, including:
- Motivational and management theories (including Strategic Management Model and Change Management).
- Analysis of “Learning Organizations” and how to create them.
- Compensation systems and impact on employee job performance and satisfaction.
- Team-building and self-directed teams.
- Organizational culture.
- Organizational structures and impact on service delivery, including:
- Community Governance and impact on Social Services
- Roles, responsibilities and utilization issues regarding voluntary boards.
- Models of community care and interventions for people with severe mental illness
- Strategies for safeguarding people with disabilities.
- Lecture and guest lecture
- Group presentation
- Video/DVD
This course will conform to Douglas College policy regarding the number and weighting of evaluations.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Conduct a comprehensive organizational analysis of a rehabilitation organization/agency.
- analyze management’s approach to issues such as organizational structures, culture, teamwork, leadership, managing change and working with a voluntary board.
- recommend effective management strategies to make positive changes within the organization.
- Analyze current and emerging management issues and trends.
- Research and apply theories of management approaches to labour relations, employee motivation, and leadership skills.
