This course is designed for adults needing to improve their spelling skills. Students will receive individual assistance with specific skills such as recognizing basic affixes and roots, applying appropriate rules and generalizations, and distinguishing homonym spellings. Using the dictionary for vocabulary development and correct spelling will also be covered.
Individual programs may be designed for each student; these programs will be based on weaknesses or deficiencies diagnosed by the instructor. The course consists of the following topics:
- Spelling Skills
- rules and generalizations
- systems of learning to spell sight words
- homonyms, and contractions
- spelling assistance
- vocabulary building
Methods of Instruction
A combination of instructional methods will be used in order to balance instructional efficiency with individual student needs. Small group instruction, individual assistance (in lab tutorial or scheduled appointments) and student directed learning will be selected where appropriate and possible. Collaborative learning will be facilitated.
The student will be expected to maintain regular attendance and progress and to undertake independent learning as directed. Regular feedback and informal progress reports will be available from the instructor.
Means of Assessment
A mastery model of on-going evaluation will be used. A student will have completed the course when he/she has demonstrated through satisfactory completion of exercises and assignments that the course objectives have been achieved.
Progress will be monitored on a regular basis by the instructor in consultation with each student.
The aims of the course are for students to:
- analyze and spell words according to spelling rules and generalizations, such as the doubling rule and the use of basic affixes and roots;
- apply systems for mastering the spelling of such words according to the individual needs;
- distinguish some homonym spellings and to spell some contractions;
- use a dictionary to help with spelling and vocabulary building;
- apply spelling and proof reading skills to related reading and writing activities.
