Douglas College launches BC's only fully online Child and Youth Care diploma

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Douglas College’s Diploma in Child and Youth Care (CYC) will be available to students online starting this September to help meet the demand for child and youth care workers in British Columbia. The program will improve access to education and youth care, especially in rural communities. It will increase the number of CYC workers in these communities, as prospective students from across the province can earn this credential through B.C.’s only fully online CYC diploma program.

“Adding this flexible online program to our already considerable CYC credentials will allow students to study from home in the evening, increasing accessibility for students who work during the day or have families,” Karla Gronsdahl, Dean of Applied Community Studies.

Students will learn how to intervene in the lives of young people and provide guidance to those dealing with abuse, neglect, addiction, or who may have behavioural or learning difficulties. They will gain real-world experience working with youth during two 150-hour practicums in their home communities. Graduates will be qualified to work directly with children and youth in schools, community centres, addictions services and much more.

“We have partnered with communities from around B.C. to match CYC students with the best practicum placements for achieving their goals,” said Gronsdahl. “Our students will develop the leadership skills needed to thrive in child and youth care while creating valuable connections with local employers.”

Applications for the online diploma are currently open for Fall 2022.

Douglas College is the largest degree-granting college in B.C., combining the academic foundations of a university and the employer-ready skills of a college to graduate resilient global citizens who adapt, innovate and lead in a changing world.
