Using Modern Authentication to access your College Email Account

Any Douglas College employee or student who checks their College email from any email application that uses an older authentication method (so-called basic) may encounter a problem when they are trying to set up Multifactor Authentication (MFA) because Modern Authentication is required for setting up MFA.

And they won’t be allowed to access their College email accounts as of October 1, 2022, because Microsoft will start gradually enforcing Modern Authentication when their customers access their Microsoft/Office 365 email accounts, regardless of whether MFA is used or not.

To avoid being denied access to your College email account, you need to have an updated version of Outlook, or another email application, that supports Modern Authentication on your devices. If you are using one of the email solutions listed below, your email application should be able to support Modern Authentication.

  • iPhone - Mail app (built-in) for iOS 11.3.1+ (iPhones launched from 2013 (5s) onwards can run at least iOS 12)

  • Mac - Mail app for macOS Mojave 10.14+ (Macs launched from mid-2012 onwards can run at least macOS Mojave)

  • Outlook App for iPhones and Androids

  • Outlook Email (Outlook 2016 or newer versions; for all platforms)

  • Outlook Web App (OWA) (for all platforms)

  • Gmail app for Androids or iPhones

  • Mozilla Thunderbird 78+ for all platforms

However, even if your email solution is of the right version, it may not be set up to support Modern Authentication for your account if you have migrated your account from an old device with the old settings. If you are unsure if your email account is configured to support Modern Authentication, it is best to delete your account entirely and re-install it. Refer to this document on how to remove your mail account and re-install it back on your iPhone

If you are using an Android phone, you may need to install an Outlook App on it to be able to retrieve your emails. Refer to this instruction on how to install an Outlook App on an Android device

Douglas College is implementing MFA (also sometimes called 2FA) for all employees and students, and Modern Authentication is required for it to work. So, act now to ensure continued access to your College email account on all your devices.
