Partnership with SFU gives Douglas College engineering grads third option to complete bachelor’s degree

Douglas College Engineering students can now complete their bachelor’s degree at Simon Fraser University’s new School of Sustainable Energy Engineering (SEE).

Effective January 2021, graduates of the Douglas College Engineering Foundations Certificate program who meet the GPA and other requirements have a guaranteed transfer pathway into the second year of SEE’s Bachelor of Applied Science program.

The pathway is in addition to existing pathways for Douglas graduates to the schools of Engineering Science and Mechatronic Systems Engineering at SFU.

“Douglas College Engineering grads now have guaranteed transfer pathways to all three engineering programs at SFU,” said Brian Chapell, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Douglas College. “With the addition of the Bachelor of Applied Science through the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering, our grads have the opportunity to develop in-demand skills and become leaders in clean technology sectors like renewable energy, smart cities, sustainable manufacturing, clean power generation, and sustainable food and water solutions.”

The Engineering Foundations Certificate is a full-time, 35-credit program offered in the Fall and Winter semesters. Students who complete the certificate also have guaranteed transfer pathways to engineering programs at the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria.

“Students in the certificate program develop engineering fundamentals in a highly personalized learning environment,” said Allan Majdanac, Engineering Program Coordinator at Douglas College. “This formative year provides them with a solid academic foundation and ensures they are well-prepared for success in their future engineering education.”

In addition to the certificate, Douglas College also offers a two-year Diploma in Engineering and Fabrication Technologies, in which students complete the academic courses required to transfer to university as well as develop practical skills in design, prototyping and fabrication.

Douglas College is the largest degree-granting college in B.C., combining the academic foundations of a university and the employer-ready skills of a college to graduate resilient global citizens who adapt, innovate and lead in a changing world.
