Douglas College’s Therapeutic Recreation diploma provides flexibility with new online program starting Fall 2021

Starting in Fall 2021, students from throughout B.C. can study from their home communities and choose between full- or part-time studies for Douglas College’s Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation. The two-year Therapeutic Recreation diploma prepares students to develop, implement and facilitate a variety of programs for individuals with physical and mental health challenges.

“The flexibility of the new online Diploma program means students no longer need to move to the Lower Mainland in order to start or complete their studies. They can remain in their home communities and continue working while taking our online courses,” said Karla Gronsdahl, Dean of Applied Community Studies at Douglas College. “By making this program more accessible, we are supporting the growing need for Therapeutic Recreation graduates across the province.”

Classes will be facilitated through live online instruction, and students will have the opportunity to apply classroom theory in real-life situations with practicum work in healthcare or social service settings in their home communities.

Graduates of the program are highly sought after, with 90% of Douglas College graduates finding employment within six months of completing the program. Diploma graduates can find work as recreation assistants, recreation therapy assistants, program planners, recreation leaders and activity workers in a wide range of settings, including hospitals, mental health centres, long-term care homes, rehabilitation centres, correctional facilities, youth centres and community recreation centres.

Students also have the option to transfer their credits to a degree program within Douglas or other B.C. post-secondary institutions to continue their studies, including the Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation, the Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care and the Bachelor of Community Rehabilitation programs.

For students who prefer face-to-face contact, in-person learning is still available. Enrolment is currently open for the Fall 2021 semester. For more information about the program, upcoming info sessions and how to apply, visit douglascollege.ca/program/dptrt.
