Learning Activities

The instructor will facilitate, observe and evaluate students’ participation in learning activities which enhance their effectiveness in their MATU 0411 coursework.  Whole and small group instruction will be combined with individual assistance and student directed learning.

Course Description
This course is a lab course to complement MATU 0411. Students will develop math study skills to support their MATU 0411 coursework. Activities will help students develop the mathematical comprehension and skills they need to participate effectively in the classroom, to complete course assignments, and perform well on tests and exams.
Course Content

Math content will be derived from the MATU 0411 and sequenced accordingly.  Skill areas addressed are:

  1. understanding lecture content
  2. taking and using effective notes
  3. understanding and following instructions specific to mathematics
  4. understanding and studying the textbook
  5. organizing coursework and developing a systematic approach to review
  6. studying for tests
  7. securing and using other resources for study purposes, eg. study groups, CAI, alternate texts
Learning Outcomes

The aims of the course are for students (within the context of MATU 0411) to:

  1. develop positive attitudes to learning and studying math.
  2. explore and develop a repertoire of strategies, skills, and approaches to learning and studying mathematics that are appropriate to the individual.
  3. develop, practice and demonstrate effective strategies, skills, and approaches to learning and study that are directed at improving learning and academic performance in mathematics.
  4. demonstrate learning and study strategies, skills and approaches in practical as well as academic contexts.
  5. work cooperatively in a classroom setting.
Means of Assessment

A mastery model of on-going evaluation will be used.  A student will reach mastery when s/he has demonstrated through satisfactory completion of exercises, assignments and other assessments that the course objectives have been achieved.

Where formal tests of specific skills are used, mastery will be defined as a score of 80% or more.

Progress will be monitored on a regular basis by the instructor in consultation with each student.

Evaluation in MATU 0413 will not be tied to students’ achievement in MATU 0411.
