Why Douglas College was a perfect fit for Therapeutic Recreation student Alison Granger-Brown

Before Alison Granger-Brown applied to Douglas College's Therapeutic Recreation program, she attended nursing school in London, England and lived in Africa before moving to Canada to bring up her three sons and continue her education.

For Alison, the program was a perfect fit. She’s grateful for the extensive knowledge she gained from high-quality, expert faculty. She formed close and memorable relationships with her instructors and fellow students, who made her feel like her education and opinions mattered to them and the College. This experience encouraged her to continue her education, finally completing a Doctorate in Human and Organizational Systems.

After a 22-year-long career in Canadian prisons as a recreation therapist, Alison will retire from corporate training and consultant work to focus on her book, Holding Hope. Alison’s book follows her experience working with a violent woman and the relationship she built with her. It discusses racism, reconciliation and healing, and how two women who appear very different could have so much in common.

Her time at Douglas was essential as it gave her the space to prepare for a long and fulfilling, yet challenging career. Even after graduating, Alison has stayed involved in the Douglas College community helping with practicum placements and guest speaking in lectures, giving back to the place that helped get her to where she is now.
