Course Description
In this course, we will examine current issues and trends in therapeutic recreation, leisure and health promotion. Issues and contemporary trends in education, practice and research are used to engage in critical and analytical thinking.
Course Content

Course content is guided by research, empirical knowledge and best practice.  The following values and principles, consistent with professional standards, inform course content.

  • Growth of the professional field requires practitioners to think critically about education, practice, research and advocacy
  • Philosophical and historical issues in TR and health promotion inform current roles, identity and professional practice
  • Understanding standards of practice promotes professional competence
  • Knowledge and application of research theory, process, practice and ethics improves professional accountability
  • Understanding health care and community service delivery systems internationally, nationally, provincially and locally provides context for the delivery of TR services within systems
  • Utilizing evidence-based practice supports trends in research
  • Examining cultural, gender and demographic trends challenges us to be inclusive in leisure and recreation services
  • Advocating for the rights of all individuals is central to therapeutic recreation professional standards of practice
Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss current social, economic and environmental concerns influencing therapeutic recreation, leisure and recreation and health promotion services in Canada and internationally.
  2. Analyze current issues in the emerging therapeutic recreation, leisure and recreation, and health promotion professions. 
  3. Analyze the trends and challenges of therapeutic recreation, leisure in recreation in health promotion in Canada and internationally.
  4. Synthesize knowledge of health and leisure in developing a comprehensive understanding of the future of therapeutic recreation,  leisure and recreation, and health promotion services
  5. Discuss methods and resources to foster professional competence in therapeutic recreation, leisure and recreation and health promotion fields.
  6. Apply knowledge of professional and current issues in therapeutic recreation, leisure and recreation and health promotion services.

Means of Assessment

This course will conform to Douglas College policy regarding the number and weighting of evaluations.  Typical means of evaluation would include a combination of:

  • Tests
  • Written assignments
  • Leadership presentation
