Intermediate Spanish II

course overview

This course is designed for students who have completed MODL 2251 or equivalent. It builds on previously acquired communication skills, further develops comprehension, oral expression, reading and writing skills, and provides a deeper understanding of the cultures of Spain and Latin America. Spanish is used in class almost exclusively.

Course Content

Systematic, in-depth study of:

  1. Syntactic structures
  2. Lexicon
  3. Cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world

Methods of Instruction

The functional-communicative approach will be used.

Class activities may include: presentation of material by the instructor, small group practice of syntactic and lexical structures studied at home, discussion of readings, listening comprehension and audio-visual based activities, and student presentations.
 
Conversation labs in small groups with a Native Language Assistant

Means of Assessment

Written Evaluations 50%
(May include but are not limited to writing and reading exercises, chapter tests, paragraph writing, written homework, preparation, Final Written Exam)
 
Oral Evaluations 50%
(May include but are not limited to oral tests, oral presentations, listening comprehension, conversation lab, attendance, preparation, class participation, Final Oral Exam)
 
Total 100%

No single evaluation will be worth more than 20%.

Learning Outcomes

Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in Spanish at the intermediate level in:

  1. Aural comprehension of authentic language situations
  2. Reading comprehension of written material
  3. Use of both past tenses, commands and subjunctive, future and conditional
  4. Speech delivery: supporting an opinion, defending a point of view with respect to reading material
  5. Written expression: expository writing
  6. Understanding target cultures

MODL 2251 (Minimum Grade of C) or Spanish 12 (Minimum Grade of A) or Assessment (see calendar).
