course overview

This course emphasizes tools, techniques and social components of project management. It applies the widely-accepted PMBOK set of standards (Project Management Body of Knowledge) to the analysis and study of project management. The course uses a chronological approach to project management and explains initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing projects. Using group discussions, case studies, and exercise simulations, students will learn how to apply tools and techniques of project management to navigate a project to a successful outcome. The Microsoft Project software tool will be introduced for project scheduling and management.

Methods of Instruction

Lectures, case studies, exercises and group discussions will be used, together with MS Project.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify and assess what constitutes a project
  2. Describe the role of the project manager
  3. Describe project management and discuss key elements of the project management framework, including project stakeholders, the project management knowledge areas, common tools and techniques, project life cycle and project success
  4. Analyze the relationship between project and portfolio management and the contribution they make to enterprise success
  5. Assess and apply the five project management process groups to a project
  6. Describe the typical level of activity for each process group, and the interactions among them
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of the project management process groups and their relationship to the project management knowledge areas
  8. Evaluate and assess various measures of determining project success
  9. Perform basic tasks with the Microsoft Project software tool
  10. Plan and manage a small in-class project
