Learning Activities

Classroom instructional mode will vary with instructional goals.  Lecture, large-group discussion, small-group discussion and learning activities, cooperative learning, and individual learning activities may be employed.  Lab tutorial and scheduled individual appointment time will be available as appropriate.  Student-directed learning outside of the classroom will also constitute a component of instruction.

Course Description
This course will help students to gain the learning and study skills needed in various types of learning situations. The course is useful for students who are involved in, or intending to enrol in, developmental courses, remedial courses, correspondence course, vocational coursework, or career coursework. The course will help students to develop and practice effective learning strategies, study skills and techniques, and approaches to learning and study. It will focus on the improvement of learning and academic performance.
Course Content

Students will receive instruction in the following skill areas:

  1. Evaluation of the demands of learning situations
  2. Evaluation of learning and academic goals
  3. Organization and Scheduling
  4. Approaches to learning
  5. Learning strategies
  6. Use of formulas
  7. Listening skills
  8. Outlining from text
  9. Understanding and utilizing memory
  10. Preparation for exams
  11. Exam-writing techniques
  12. Effective assignment completion
  13. Managing learning demands and stress
  14. Using a college library
Learning Outcomes

The aims of this course are for students:

  1. To develop positive approaches to learning and study.
  2. To explore and develop a repertoire of strategies, skills, and approaches to learning and study that are appropriate to the individual;
  3. To develop, practice, and demonstrate effective strategies, skills, and approaches to learning and study that are directed at improving learning and academic performance;
  4. To demonstrate learning and study strategies, skills and approaches in practical as well as academic contexts;
  5. To work cooperatively in classroom setting.
Means of Assessment

A mastery model of evaluation will be used.  Progress will be monitored by the instructor in an ongoing and cumulative fashion, based on written and oral demonstrations of skill.  Course credit will be granted on the basis of achievement of course objectives as demonstrated by satisfactory completion of course assignments.  Satisfactory progress and undertaking of independent learning are expected.  Feedback on progress and undertaking of independent learning are expected.  Specific feedback will accompany completed assignments, and more general feedback on progress will be provided periodically by the instructor as appropriate.
