Learning Activities

A combination of different instructional methods will be used in order to balance instructional efficiency with individual students needs.  Small group instruction, individual assistance (in lab tutorial or scheduled appointments) and student directed learning will be selected where appropriate and possible.

The student will be expected to maintain regular attendance and progress and to undertake independent learning as directed.  Regular feedback and informal progress reports will be available from the instructor.

Course Description
This course is designed for adults needing to improve their spelling skills beyond the level achieved in ENGU 0220. Students will receive individual assistance with specific skills such as recognizing affixes and roots, applying appropriate rules and distinguishing homonym spellings. Using the dictionary for vocabulary development and correct spelling will also be covered. Students who have completed this course will be competent spellers.
Course Content

Individual programs may be designed for each student; these programs will be based on weaknesses or deficiencies diagnosed by the instructor.  The course consists of the following topics:

  1. Spelling Skills
    • rules and generalizations
    • systems of learning to spell sight words
    • homonyms, contractions
    • proof-reading
  2. Dictionary Skill
    • spelling assistance
    • vocabulary building
Learning Outcomes

The aims of this course are for students:

  1. to master spelling rules and generalizations such as the doubling rule and the use of affixes and roots according to individual needs;
  2. to apply systems for mastering the spelling of sight words according to individual needs;
  3. to distinguish homonym spellings and spelling contractions;
  4. to master the use of the dictionary to help with spelling and vocabulary building;
  5. to master the application of spelling and proof reading skills to related reading and writing activities.
Means of Assessment

A mastery model of on-going evaluation will be used. A student will have completed the course when he/she has demonstrated through satisfactory completion of exercises and assignments that the course objectives have been achieved.

Where formal tests of specific skills are used, mastery will be defined as a score of 80 percent or more.

Progress will be monitored on a regular basis by the instructor in consultation with each student.

Textbook Materials

Textbooks and Materials to be Purchased by Students:

Students are required to supply a three-ring binder, paper, pen and pencil.

All other materials and textbooks will be available on loan from the instructor when needed.

Where possible, copies of those textbooks which are only for use in the classroom may be borrowed from the library or purchased from the bookstore.
