Students will receive instruction concerning:
- standard written English grammar
- punctuation and capitalization
- sentence/syntactic patterns (compound, complex, appositives, etc.)
- certain academic/technical forms: for example, summary, brief analysis, definition
- resources such as spell checks, grammar checks, dictionaries, thesauruses
- strategies such as personal spelling and vocabulary dictionaries
- journal writing.
Classroom instructional mode will vary with instructional goals. Lecture, large group discussion and learning activities, and cooperative learning will be employed. As well, there will be a component of individualized diagnosis and remediation of students’ entrenched errors.
A mastery model of evaluation will be used. Mastery is set at 70%. Progress will be monitored in an ongoing and cumulative fashion based on written assignments and class participation. Students will receive regular feedback on their progress. Course credit will be granted on the basis of the satisfactory completion of all assignments and revisions, and on the ability to write coherent, sentences at a ENGU 0355 exit level minimally.
It is expected the student will:
- Demonstrate clear, logical expressions at the sentence and paragraph level by, among other things,
- providing sufficient clarification and elaboration of key words in analysis (e.g. Defining terms and providing examples)
- providing coherent transitions between components of a sentence (avoiding faulty predication) and between sentences in a paragraph
Students may be required to purchase a coursepack or textbook.
