Overview

Course Description
This course supplements both ENGU 0355 and ENGU 0455. It is designed for students whose many grammar and usage errors create awkwardness and interfere with the intended meaning of their writing. Students will work at the word level, sentence level, and paragraph level to develop editing strategies for basic clarity and style, and proofreading strategies for errors in grammar, word choice, spelling, and punctuation. Journalistic readings will be used as prompts for brief composition practice.
Course Content

Students will receive instruction concerning:

  1. standard written English grammar
  2. punctuation and capitalization
  3. sentence/syntactic patterns (compound, complex, appositives, etc.)
  4. certain academic/technical forms: for example, summary, brief analysis, definition
  5. resources such as spell checks, grammar checks, dictionaries, thesauruses
  6. strategies such as personal spelling and vocabulary dictionaries
  7. journal writing.
Methods Of Instruction

Classroom instructional mode will vary with instructional goals.  Lecture, large group discussion and learning activities, and cooperative learning will be employed.  As well, there will be a component of individualized diagnosis and remediation of students’ entrenched errors.

Means of Assessment

A mastery model of evaluation will be used.  Mastery is set at 70%. Progress will be monitored in an ongoing and cumulative fashion based on written assignments and class participation.  Students will receive regular feedback on their progress.  Course credit will be granted on the basis of the satisfactory completion of all assignments and revisions, and on the ability to write coherent, sentences at a ENGU 0355 exit level minimally.

Learning Outcomes

It is expected the student will:

  1. Demonstrate clear, logical expressions at the sentence and paragraph level by, among other things,
  • providing sufficient clarification and elaboration of key words in analysis (e.g. Defining terms and providing examples)
  • providing coherent transitions between components of a sentence (avoiding faulty predication) and between sentences in a paragraph
  • Demonstrate grammatical sentence and a variety of sentence/syntactic structures (subordination,  co-ordination)
  • Use the conventions of punctuation and capitalization
  • Avoid word level errors (misspellings, diction errors)
  • Demonstrate strategies for self-checking (revising, editing, proofreading)
  • Use peer and instructor feedback effectively.
