Course Description
This is one of a group of six courses that together lead to a Douglas College Certificate in Teaching and Tutoring English as a Second Language to Adults. During this course, students develop practical skills needed in a teaching career. They apply theory to practice by planning and teaching mini-lessons and develop classroom management and communication skills. Students also develop reflective practice strategies necessary to ongoing teacher development and learn to conduct themselves professionally in the teaching workplace.

  3. Whiteboard  use
  4. Instructional delivery strategies – individual, small groups & whole class
  5. Time management techniques
  6. Professional conduct in the TESL work environment
Learning Outcomes

Participants successfully completing the course will demonstrate ability to:

  1. Create a lesson plan to address specific learning objectives for a specific group of students
  2. Select and apply various lesson delivery strategies to enable specific learning outcomes
  3. Apply reflective practice strategies to improving lessons
  4. Apply reflective practice strategies to improving teaching skills
  5. Communicate effectively in the professional teaching environment
Means of Assessment

Students are assigned grades according to their level of achievement on assigned tasks which may include preparation and delivery of mini-lessons, observation of teaching reports and reflective tasks.
