Course Description
This course provides students with an opportunity to pursue a specific project of interest within the field of Sport Science. Projects may involve a research study, a review and analysis of current literature, a health promotion initiative, or other approved projects. Projects are approved, supported, and evaluated by a Sport Science faculty supervisor. This course is offered as a guided study. Please contact the Department Chair for registration.
Course Content

The form, content, and format of the project is to be determined by the faculty supervisor and the student, and must be approved by the Dean prior to admission to this course. Readings and assignment criteria will cater to the student’s identified learning objectives. Details regarding the student’s learning objectives, required readings, and assignments will be fully outlined by the faculty supervisor.

Note: Empirical research should follow appropriate protocols including:

  • the development of the research question(s);
  • the design of the study;
  • the completion of ethics review;
  • the development of the human participants consent form;
  • participant recruitment;
  • data collection and analysis;
  • completion of the final report.

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • conduct an in depth investigation into a topic in Sport Science;
  • identify, examine, assess, and evaluate a range of scholarly sources;
  • identify a problem or knowledge gap;
  • develop methodology to address an identified problem or knowledge gap;
  • design a project guided by ethical principles;
  • identify the need and seek ethics approval from the Research Ethics Board;
  • present findings in a context appropriate format.
Means of Assessment

Assessment will be in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. The instructor will present a written course outline with specific evaluation criteria at the beginning of the semester. 

The specific distribution of the assessments will be determined jointly between the student and faculty supervisor. A sample evaluation criteria for a research project is provided below:

Textbook Materials

Textbooks and materials will be determined by the faculty supervisor.

Prerequisites

A minimum of 60 credits, and be enrolled in the BPEC program in good academic standing.
