Overview

Course Description
Continuation from Semester 1/3 Mental Status Examination (MSE) charting and documentation will be emphasized. Introduction to resistance, and strategies for handling resistance is discussed in dealing with difficult to engage clients. Discussion on normalization and sexuality, medication adherence, introduction to motivational interviewing, and conflict resolution will be explored.
Course Content

Therapeutic communication will be introduced through:

  • Understanding the phases of the nurse-client relationship
  • Understanding and demonstration of resistance, strategies for handling resistance
  • Understanding mental status assessment
  • Understanding and demonstration of charting and documentation of client's mental status and activities
  • Understanding of medication adherence, conflict resolution and normalization
  • Understanding the issues of professional documentation and the relationship to therapeutic communication
Learning Activities

Experiential communication formats are used, including, interactive communication scenarios, video critiquing and participative self-awareness exercises.

Means of Assessment

The course evaluation is consistent with Douglas College evaluation policy.  An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course

 

This is a graded course.

Learning Outcomes

Students will have opportunity to learn the therapeutic communication skills of effective listening, self-disclosure and humour. Students will have opportunities to participate in simulated role-plays with individuals that emphasize integration of theory and concepts. Students will learn the relevance of cultural competence as it relates to therapeutic communication.
