If you are in danger or fear for another person’s safety, phone 911 and Douglas College Security if you are on campus.
These are situations when you need immediate help and should phone 911 or visit the nearest emergency room:
- Experiencing suicidal thoughts or are trying to commit suicide
- Experiencing sensations that aren’t real or have beliefs that can’t possibly be true
- Making decisions that put you in danger
- Unable to care for yourself to the point of risking serious harm
- Experiencing an alcohol or drug overdose, or serious side effects to medication
Below you will find links to organizations that can provide 24/7 crisis assistance and/or support for specific mental health-related concerns.
Mental Health Support and Crisis Services
Here2Talk connects students with mental health support when they need it. Through this program, all students currently registered in a B.C. post-secondary institution have access to free, confidential professional counselling and community referral services, conveniently available 24/7 via app, phone call and web chat.
The Fraser Health Crisis Line is available 24/7 for anyone who needs emotional support, crisis intervention and resource information.
The Crisis Centre provides information on how to help yourself or someone you are concerned about who may be considering suicide. It also offers 24/7 crisis support with trained volunteers via a help line or online chat for anyone considering suicide or in distress.
Youth in BC has an online chat with a crisis responder, available noon to 1am.
Kids Help Phone is a 24/7, national support service for youth and young adults (up to age 25). They offer professional counselling, information and referrals and volunteer-led, text-based support in both English and French.
Victim Support and Crisis Services
WAVAW (Women Against Violence Against Women) is a resource for women and children who are abused or fleeing domestic abuse. They also provide sexual assault crisis counselling. Their crisis and information line is available 24 hours a day.
VictimLink BC provides 24/7 information and referrals for victims of crime, including sexual violence. Services are available in 150 languages via phone, text message or email.
Domestic Violence BC offers a list of resources for people experiencing domestic violence.
IBPOC and Cultural Support and Crisis Services
The Indian Residential School Survivors Society supports residential school survivors and offers a 24/7 crisis line for anyone experiencing pain or distress as a result of their residential school experience.
The Hope for Wellness Helpline offers 24/7 mental health counselling and crisis intervention to all Indigenous peoples across Canada by experienced and culturally competent counsellors. Counsellors can work with you to find other wellness supports that are available near you. Phone and chat counselling is available in English and French. On request, phone counselling is also available in Cree, Ojibway, and Inuktitut.
The Mental Health Benefit (through the First Nations Health Authority) provides info on available funding options for counselling and FNHA mental health programs.
Healing in Colour offers a directory of IBPOC therapists who are committed to values supporting IBPOC in all intersections.
The Vancouver Black Therapy & Advocacy Foundation is a non-profit organization that connects Black community members with accredited local Black counsellors and therapists.
Naseeha provides a 12-hour confidential helpline for young Muslims to receive immediate, anonymous, and confidential support.
LGBTQ2S+ Support Services
Sher Vancouver is a non-profit supporting LGBTQ2S+ South Asians in Metro Vancouver. They offer peer support groups, a referral service, mentorship program and professional counselling.
QMUNITY is BC's Queer Resource Centre, which responds to the needs of B.C.’s queer communities and helps them thrive.
Substance Use Support Services
The Alcohol and Drug Information and Referral Service is available 24/7 to direct B.C. residents to education, prevention and treatment services and regulatory agencies.
Wellness Together Canada provides free mental health and substance use support, self-assessment, resources and counselling with a mental health professional. This service is available to all Canadians, 24/7.
Eating Disorders Support Service
Looking Glass Foundation of BC offers resources, support and online group programs focused on disordered eating.

Anxiety Canada has anxiety resources, self-help exercises and printable handouts on common anxiety concerns.
