Methods Of Instruction

Students will acquire knowledge and skill and learn to apply concepts through a variety of means of instruction and activities, including: lecture, demonstration, audio-visual aids, case studies, debate forums, critical thinking exercises and teamwork.

Course Description
Students will explore children and adolescent mental health issues, differentiating them from adult mental health disorders. This course examines specific mental health disorders seen in children and adolescents from a holistic systems perspective utilizing the Neuman Systems Model of Nursing. The course content will also include developmental, social and cultural theories related to the causes and risk factors of selected child and adolescent mental health disorders. Course content will also include developmental, social and cultural theories that relate to the causes of mental health issues in children; risk factors in children; and adolescent mental health disorders. Psychiatric nursing assessment and interventions will be identified and will be discussed within the context of a multidisciplinary approach and will focus on primary, secondary and tertiary levels of prevention and health promotion strategies. The Neuman Systems Model of Nursing will guide the psychiatric nursing analysis.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course the learner will be able to:

  • assess attitudes, knowledge & skills needed in clinical psychiatric nursing practice to care for the children and adolescents experiencing mental health challenges and/or disorders
  • assess attitudes, knowledge & skills needed in clinical psychiatric nursing practice to care for the children and adolescents experiencing developmental challenges and/or disorders.
  • explain the theory and principles related to identification, screening and assessment of challenges specific to children and adolescents utilizing the Neuman Systems Model of Nursing

 

Apply Systems Theory to Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing

  • analyse key concepts of the Neuman Systems Model of Nursing in relation to child and adolescent mental health challenges/disorders.

Systematically Assess and Analyse a Child and Adolescent at Risk for Mental Health Disorders

  • Explore the differences in conducting assessment for children/adolescents in comparison to the adult individual based on the Neuman Systems Model of nursing.

Analyse the Psychiatric Nurse’s Role in Family Assessment Strategies

Means of Assessment

The course evaluation is consistent with Douglas College evaluation policy.  An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course.
