Learning Activities

Communications between instructor and students will be conducted online using the course email, bulletin board and chat utilities.  The instructor will guide the students through a series of learning objectives using motivation and online instruction.  The assigned readings, together with the reinforcement exercises, are the principal learning activities.  Additional materials and resources are available online.

Course Description
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. Medical Transcription is an introductory course that familiarizes students with transcribing medical documents from oral dictation. Emphasis is placed on transcribing accurate content and applying correct formats, grammar and punctuation. The main objective is to provide students with knowledge of the content and formats of medical reports typically dictated in clinics and hospitals.
Course Content

  2. Medical record documentation
  3. Terminology for diseases, conditions, and treatment protocols
  4. Medical reports
  5. Job environment
  6. Electronic patient medical record
Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course, you will reliably demonstrate  the ability to:

 

  1. Describe the importance of patient record confidentiality and apply industry guidelines to keep medical documentation secure
  2. Recognize the terminology for diseases, conditions, and treatment protocols related to the specialties of dermatology, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, pulmonology, cardiology, gastroenterology, obstetrics and gynecology, urology and nephrology, neurology, psychology, haematology and oncology, and immunology
  3. Describe the purpose and types of information contained in the most common kinds of reports transcribed
  4. Transcribe accurately and correctly formatted office notes, chart notes, consultation letters, history and physical reports, operative reports, discharge summaries, radiology reports, pathology reports, operative reports, labour and delivery reports, emergency department reports, neuropsychological evaluations, and autopsy reports
  5. Develop proofreading and editing skills and apply them to transcription work, including speech recognized text, based on industry standards
  6. Examine the job environment of medical transcription and demonstrate an ability to work effectively and efficiently with the tools of medical transcription, including productivity tools
  7. Define and use appropriate parameters for editing, correcting, and amending the electronic patient medical record using industry-accepted standards and references
