Course Description
This course examines different types of hearing loss as well as their potential causes. Audiometric test results will be explored in relation to various classes of hearing disorders. Identification of red flags and appropriate referral to a physician for medical clearance to proceed with clients will also be reviewed.

Course Content

1.      Hearing loss related diseases and disorders 

2.      Types of hearing impairment resulting from various diseases and disorders

3.      Outer ear, middle ear, inner ear and auditory nerve diseases or disorders

4.      Red flag hearing conditions and performing a physician referral when required

5.      Audiometric results and audiogram review based on the type of hearing related disease or disorder

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1.      Describe diseases and disorders that result in the impairment of hearing

2.      Identify the types of hearing loss resulting from various diseases and disorders

3.      Identify the different anatomical areas associated with various hearing impairments

4.      Identify red flag conditions as specified by the College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of BC and perform an appropriate physician referral when required

5.      Identify and predict audiometric results based on the type of hearing related disease or disorder

Means of Assessment

Evaluation will be carried out in accordance with Douglas College policy. The instructor will present a written course outline with specific evaluation criteria at the beginning of the semester. Evaluation will be based on the following:

Online discussion forum and group work 5-15%

Written tests 20-30%

Written midterm examination 20-30%

Written final examination 25-30%
