Overview

Course description
Designed primarily for students in the Music Technology Diploma Program, this course provides an opportunity for students to rehearse and perform together in a technologically mediated context. Students will be placed into ensembles of varying sizes and instrumentation, and will rehearse independently as well as receiving instruction. All ensembles will perform.
Course content

  • Cooperation in rehearsal - collaborating to identify and agree upon matters of tempo, dynamics, intonation, articulation, phrasing and interpretation, etc.
  • Ensemble listening skills - hearing oneself within the group setting, relating aurally/musically to others in the ensemble
  • Leadership skills
  • Non-verbal communication during performance
  • Management of performance issues
  • Effective use of technology to create sounds and mix appropriate volume balances during rehearsals and live performance
Learning activities

Students will be placed into ensembles of varying instrumentation, including voice.  Aided by the instructor, students will evaluate rehearsals and the final performance to identify the strengths and weaknesses and explore strategies for improvement.

Means of assessment

Assessment will be based on course objectives and will be carried out in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. Instructors may use a student’s record of attendance and/or level of active participation in a course as part of the student’s graded performance. Where this occurs, expectations and grade calculations regarding class attendance and participation must be clearly defined in the Instructor Course Outline.

*Assigned Preparation Tasks (minimum of four) 30%
Music Creation 20%
** Professionalism 20%
Self-reflection 10%
Final Performance and Soundcheck 10%
 ***Attendance 10%

* These can include but are not limited to learning assigned excerpts, preparing technology, preparing backing tracks, and reviewing and evaluating rehearsal recordings.

** Professionalism is assessed on taking responsibility for meeting deadlines, constructive and considerate inter-personal communication, respectful in-class conduct, contribution to class discussion and group work. Grades are moderated by the instructor’s evaluation of the student’s readiness, attentiveness and effort during rehearsals, and contribution to the ensemble.

*** Consistent attendance and punctuality is required.
