Course Description
This course provides a hands-on training on server administration under a global networked environment. Students will be introduced to a variety of popular Network Operating Systems (NOS) such as Novell Netware, Windows Server and Linux based server. Topics include RAID configuration, Active Directory, network file systems, network printing, DNS, DHCP, email server, web server, remote access service and network resources management. Students will be trained to install and configure popular NOS including Windows server and one other NOS.
Note: Students who received credit from CISY 3445 will not receive any additional credit from this course.
Course Content
  1. Network Operating Systems overview and comparison (Novell, Windows & UNIX)
  2. Server hardware technologies
  3. Planning network protocol and compatibility
  4. Review of multi-host routing and network troubleshooting using built-in tools (e.g. route, ping and tracert)
  5. Configuring and troubleshooting DHCP, DNS and WINS service using built-in tools
  6. Configuring server storage, backup technologies, RAID configuration and SAN storage
  7. Windows server installation and deployment planning
  8. Managing Active Directory structure, account security, group policy and object security
  9. Managing DFS, Disk Quotas and software installation process
  10. Administering and configuring SMTP service and Exchange Server
  11. Managing Internet and remote access services (IIS and FTP Server and terminal service)
  12. Server resource monitoring, network service optimization and tuning
  13. Novell Netware structure, eDirectory and object security
  14. Netware Utilities: SETUP, NDS, PCONSOLE, CONSOLE
  15. Novell Groupwise / Lotus Notes / MS Exchange messaging systems
  16. High availability network service clustering
Learning Outcomes

The student will be able to:

  1. explain the importance of network management policies;
  2. specify network infrastructure and hardware devices required in building a scalable Local Area Network (LAN);
  3. explain and apply the criteria for selecting appropriate Network Operating Systems (NOS);
  4. administer and configure Windows Server and at least one other network operating system;
  5. troubleshoot problems in application layer network protocol and directory service;
  6. manage account and network resources using Active Directory or eDirectory services;
  7. setup ftp service, web service, mail service and terminal server;
  8. explain issues in LDAP, Samba and distributed file system;
  9. explain issues in fault tolerance, high availability and clustering setup.
