Overview

Course description
This course covers essential features of Microsoft Excel software. Topics include workbooks and worksheets, functions and formulas, charts, datasets and data tables, pivot tables, what-if analyses, date and time functions, logic functions, statistical functions and data analysis, multi-sheet workbooks, data import and transformation, templates and MACROs.
Course content
  1. Excel workbooks, worksheets, and cell references 
  2. Data entry, data formats, function entry, and formulas  
  3. Charts and data representation 
  4. Data sets, data tables, and pivot tables 
  5. What-if-analyses, one- and two-variable tables and goal seeking 
  6. Logic functions, count and evaluate under multiple conditions 
  7. Statistical and financial functions, data analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) 
  8. Multisheet workbooks, 3D referencing, and data consolidation 
  9. External data import and transformation 
  10. Worksheet templates, annotation and inspection 
  11. Repetitive and reusable editing steps and MACROs 
  12. Applications of Excel in solving real-world business problems 
  13. Use and apply applications of AI tools in Excel 
Learning activities

Lecture, seminar, demonstration, and hands-on exercises.

Means of assessment

Evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy.

Assignments/Labs (min 3)  10-30%
Term Tests (min 3) (combination of theory and hands-on tests)  30-45%
Final Examination* 30-40%
Total 100%

* Practical hands-on computer exam

In order to pass the course, students must, in addition to receiving an overall course grade of 50%, also achieve a grade of at least 50% on the combined weighted examination components (including quizzes, tests, exams).

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, the successful student will be able to: 

  1. Describe the main features and functions of Excel
  2. Create data in Excel or import data to Excel  
  3. Use built-in statistical, financial and logic functions effectively
  4. Build and use data tables and pivot tables 
  5. Employ different charts to visualize data from different perspectives
  6. Carry out a what-if analyses 
  7. Create and manage multisheet workbooks 
  8. Create MACROs to improve productivity 
  9. Use Excel to solve real-world problems 
  10. Use and apply AI tools in Excel to solve complex real-world problems

Pre-Calculus 11 (minimum of C) or Foundations of Math 11 (minimum of C) or MATU 0410 (minimum of C) or FINC 1231 (minimum of C) or approved substitution OR currently active in one of the following:
