A major earthquake could occur at anytime in B.C. Being prepared is a crucial part to help prevent injuries or even death.
Biggest dangers
- Falling Objects – hazards like heavy, sharp or pointed objects on high shelves, pictures, tall unsecured furniture and file cabinets
- Fires and/or exposed electrical wiring
- Doors, Broken Windows and other types of glass items
If you are inside during an earthquake
- Stay indoors
- DROP – Take cover underneath a table, desk or other sturdy furniture
- COVER – Protect you head and neck with your hands and arms
- HOLD – Secure yourself as best as possible
- Stay against an inner wall
- Protect your head and neck
- Do not use elevators
If you are outside during an earthquake
- Do not go inside
- Stay in an open area
- Protect you head and neck
- If driving, stop, and remain in your vehicle
After the earthquake
- Be prepared for aftershocks - Do not leave your shelter for at least 60 seconds
- Wait for the instructions from emergency personnel, or your DC Safety, Security, and Risk Management Team.
- Assist injured or support any vulnerable peoples – report status to Floor Wardens or directly to Security.
