Course Description
This seven-week course assists individuals to make informed career choices. Assessments of personal values, needs, skills, interests and abilities are considered; information resources concerning occupations, educational programs, training requirements and future trends are presented. Class discussions, outside readings and research, encourage students to consider the occupations and training opportunities available to them. It is recommended that students choose one of HUMD 1142, HUMD 1147 or HUMD 0130 because of overlapping content.
Course Content

a)       Assessment of personal needs, values, skills, interests, personality style and abilities

b)       Career Research ie.:  print materials, Internet, community resources and informational interviews.

c)       Employment and societal trends will be examined.  Major societal changes and trends that affect employment opportunities will be discussed.

d)       Information about college, university, technical institutes, vocational schools, apprenticeship programs and public or private industry will be researched.

e)       Students will learn decision making strategies that will help them make informed career choices.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

a)       Develop a clear understanding of their needs, values, skills, interests, personality style and abilities.

b)       Relate their personal qualities to appropriate career options.

c)       Research potential career options using print resources, Internet and informational interviewing.

d)       Develop increased awareness of the labour market

e)       Develop a viable career plan

Means of Assessment

Due to the experiential nature of the course, attendance is necessary to maximize the students’ learning.  The specific course assignments and their weighting will be determined by the instructor. 

 

a)  Completion of standardized and non-standardized vocational assessment inventories

b)  Completion of in class exercises

c)  Preparation of a personal summary paper

d)  Participation in an informational interview

e)  Participation in an occupational research project

f)  Submission of a weekly journal in which the student records his or her reactions, experiences, and

     learning as related to the course

g)  In class quizzes
