The role of Douglas College in Marci Fisk Wiltshire’s love for learning and passion for social justice

After being out of school for over a decade, Marci Fisk Wiltshire was ready to further her education. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to study, so she applied to Douglas College's General Studies program. Despite not having a high school diploma, being at Douglas helped her discover her academic potential and a love of learning. The small class sizes and experienced faculty allowed her to  nurture her capabilities and skills.

While at Douglas College, Marci was inspired by her instructors' passion for teaching and learning. Sociology instructor Alison Thomas's knowledge of feminism and Political Science instructors Darin Nesbitt and Shaun Tyakoff's love of politics motivated her to learn more about these subjects and gain new perspectives. Already working in community health and social services, Marci eventually decided to get her master’s degree in social work.

After having her first child, Marci became permanently disabled , leaving her unable to continue working in her field. However, she remained passionate about social justice issues and went ahead with pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Work at Wilfrid Laurier University, which she is set to complete in 2024.

After graduating, Marci wants to work with children with life-limiting illnesses and their families as they navigate the health care system. Her story proves that it's never too late to learn new things or achieve new goals.
