A to Z Personal Trainer Program

If your career goal is to become a Certified Personal Trainer, or if you're looking to deepen your knowledge of fitness and health, the Douglas College-Sports Institute A to Z Personal Trainer Program is designed to provide students with both knowledge and practical experience while meeting industry certification requirements. The program covers modules such as Fitness Theory, Weight Training, and Personal Training. Douglas College is the largest provider of British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) courses and workshops.

At Douglas College, our outstanding facilitators are experienced professionals at the top of their respective fields. The program is offered onsite at our New Westminster Campus, which provides classrooms, labs, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a gymnasium, and recreational spaces for students to study, exercise, train, and prepare for all modules.

Program Requirements

There are three sequential Modules in the Program, offered in person at the Douglas College-New Westminster Campus:

Module 1: Fitness Theory    

Module 2: Weight Training   

Module 3: Personal Training 

Continuing Education programs are designed to be accessible to adult learners, the program is structured so that each module is scheduled and confirmed as it progresses, allowing students sufficient time to fulfill the BCRPA prerequisites required to advance to the next module. 

Completion of all three modules is required to become certified as a Personal Trainer with the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA).

To register in the A to Z: Personal Trainer Program at Douglas College, there are no prerequisites for the Fitness Theory Module (one). There are sequential prerequisites for registering for Weight Training Module (two) and Personal Training Module (three). 

*Applicants must meet the general college admission requirements, which include being at least 17 years of age by the end of the first month of studies in the semester of entry and at least 18 years old at the time of the Fitness Theory exam).

Program Cost

Each module requires a separate registration and payment, provided the student has met the prerequisites to continue in the module sequence. Module payments are made in 3 installments and are as follows:

  1. At the time of registration: Fitness Theory Module (1) $600,00 +GST
  2. Prior to starting: Weight Training Module (2) $600,00 +GST
  3. Prior to starting: Personal Training Module (3) $600,00 +GST  

Note: Program/Module fees are subject to change.

Student Loans 
Student loans are not available for this program as it is not University Transferable.

Refunds 
Program refunds are only available to persons who request a withdrawal or transfer within 72 hours (3 business days) before the start of the module. A $15.00 processing fee will be charged for each module withdrawal.  Refunds will not be issued once the course has started, refunds will not be issued if course fees or the refund amount is less than processing fee. Refund requests will be handled on a pro-rated- individual basis after the Module start date. 

Refunds are issued in the form of a cheque and are payable to the individual who was registered for the course. Refund Policy for more information. 

Eligible for Tax Refund

Fees for this program are tax-deductible through the Douglas College Sports Institute, eligible to claim an education tax credit on your income tax return.

To register for modules in the program, students must contact the Continuing Education Registration Office (CE Reg):

  • Complete the registration form and submit it to cereg@douglascollege.ca via email. 

    Specify the CRNs of the modules you wish to register for in the form. CRNs can be found on the individual module pages.

    Ensure you enter all CRNs for your chosen module. Please read the additional instructions provided on the registration form.

  • After submitting your completed form, a Registration Officer will respond with further instructions on payment options. 

    Once registration is processed, you will receive an email with payment instructions. Students must submit payment within 24 hours to complete registration. Students will only receive a payment confirmation email receipt once payment is received.

  • Registration is not complete until payment has been received by Douglas College. A confirmation email receipt will be sent once payment is processed.

    Please note: due to the high volume of registrations, responses may be delayed.
