Performance dates: Oct. 31 - Nov 7, 2025
Performance location: Douglas College Main Theatre (N4100), Douglas College, New Westminster Campus
Whirlwind spy thriller meets laugh-out-loud comedy and film noir romance in the Douglas College production of The 39 Steps.
Directed by Kathleen Duborg, the departments of Theatre and Stagecraft & Event Technology present a fast-paced and hilarious adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic 1935 film and John Buchan’s classic novel by the same name.
This innovative version, originally conceived by English writers Nobby Dimon and Simon Corble and later adapted by Patrick Barlow, transforms the entire adventure – with its 250 characters, espionage plots, train chases and romance – into a genre-defying play for as few as four actors.
The Douglas College production of The 39 Steps is played by a cast of five: Parnian Kabeh Zadeh, Zoe Lemaire, Rayanne Lowther, Luna María and Andrea Soto.
“The play encompasses many styles and forms of performance and acting: clown, mime, naturalism, configuration, puppetry and stuff we just made up on the spot,” said Duborg. “My desire was to honour the theatricality of transformation and celebrate the inventiveness of our actors with this off-the-wall play.”
The play opens Oct. 31 at 7:30pm at the New Westminster Campus’s Douglas College Main Theatre. For free tickets and more information, visit douglascollege.ca/arts-events.
