Course Description
This course will refresh the student’s writing ability in preparation for university-transfer courses requiring writing. It will include instruction in paragraph and essay development as well as work on grammar and mechanics.
Course Content
  1. General principles of paragraph and essay development
  2. Required readings as a basis for writing assignments
  3. Peer review workshops
  4. Grammar, pre-writing and revision exercises
  5. In-class and out-of-class writing
Learning Outcomes

Successful students should be able to

  1. write clearly and correctly
  2. apply principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis in their writing
  3. develop a paragraph using a topic sentence and supporting evidence
  4. develop an essay using a thesis statement
  5. plan, evaluate, revise, edit and proofread their writing
  6. begin to incorporate readings or other source materials into their writing.
Means of Assessment

A minimum of seven evaluations including at least two paragraphs and two short essays.

Fifteen percent or more of the evaluated work for the course must be completed in class.

  • Any College entrance Language Proficiency Requirement EXCEPT the Douglas College Course Options in ELLA or ENGU, OR
  • a minimum grade of C- in ELLA 0460, or a minimum grade of C- in both ELLA 0465 and 0475, OR
  • a minimum grade of C- in ENGU 0450 or ENGU 0455 or ENGU 0490
