About
Born in a small mountain town surrounded by a diverse natural landscape, my interest in geography began as far as I can remember. My curiosity quickly grew about how certain landforms shaped the natural setting that surrounded me. This curiosity continued on when I moved to Victoria, BC after I graduated high school in Nelson, BC. I was fascinated by the diversity of the marine environment and instantly fell in love with surfing. I decided to apply my curiosity towards a degree in geography. I completed a B.A. in Geography from the University of Victoria in 2010. I chose to get a B.A. because after my first year of post-secondary education, I realized I was just as interested in the human aspect of geography as much as I was interested in the physical aspect. I focused my studies mainly on GIS and Asian cultures during my four years of post-secondary education.
After I graduated from the University of Victoria, applying my newly acquired GIS skills, I spent a winter working with a seismic surveying company doing oil and gas exploration throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan. After my winter in the prairies, I was offered a job as a Lab Assistant in the Geography Department at Camosun College back in Victoria, where I spent my first two years of post-secondary education. I really enjoyed the position, helping students discover similar interests to mine and sharing our ideas. The following summer, I was offered a job at a GIS consulting firm in Victoria as a GIS Technician. I was responsible for mapping Ethnohistoric reports for First Nations throughout British Columbia. I gained a diverse set of work-related GIS skills and a huge understanding of First Nations culture and geography in British Columbia.
As much as I love GIS, my main passion in geography is to teach and share my interests with others, as I did at Camosun College a few years back. In 2018, I moved to Metro Vancouver to do what I really enjoy with geography, where I joined the Douglas College Geography Department as a Lab Technician at the New Westminster Campus. I really enjoy aiding students with their geography goals and being in a post-secondary environment. The world is forever changing and I believe there is always something new to learn regardless of how much you already know.

About
My interest in Geography began in high school, due to the influence of a great teacher. Despite this, many years passed before I decided to pursue a career in Geography.
My undergraduate studies began at Booth University College, where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biblical and Theological Studies in 1986. A variety of jobs and career paths followed, but my interest in geography would not remain buried! I later continued my studies at Simon Fraser University, where in 2000, I received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in (Physical) Geography and a minor in Earth Sciences. I also qualified as a Geoscientist-in-Training with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC. My research interests include Glacial Geomorphology and Quaternary Geology.
In 1999, I joined the Geography and the Environment Department as the Lab Technician for the David Lam Campus. My greatest enjoyment comes from working individually with students, helping each to more fully understand course material. One of my goals is to help students discover that math can be easy and fun!

Teaching interests
I began teaching in 1992 as a sessional instructor at Douglas, Kwantlen and Columbia colleges. I was hired as a sessional instructor in late 1992 at Douglas College. I have taught almost all of the Geography courses offered by the department; however, I am predominately a human geographer. I was drawn to Geography because it is an eclectic discipline with both "real world" and theoretical components. I am a strong believer in a liberal education. I expect students to take an active role in their learning and be willing to participate in the classroom. Education is an experiential and active process. I will utilize a variety of educational techniques and methodologies to facilitate the learning experience, but students must fulfill their responsibilities by being prepared and willing to learn.
Research interests
I consider myself to be an urban geographer with an emphasis upon historical, economic and planning issues. I have lived most of my life in New Westminster, thus the city constitutes my primary area of research interest.
