Overview

Course Description
This course with its corequisite EASL 0474 is the final in a series of combined reading and writing courses for students who wish to upgrade their reading and writing in order to continue their education.
EASL 0464 is an intensive reading course for advanced students who need to read more academic material efficiently and critically. This course emphasizes reading for study purposes and reading for writing. Students will read material from texts, academic and professional books and journals and literature. Reading exercises will emphasize understanding how information and ideas are developed and organized, summarizing important ideas and details, identifying and evaluating arguments, understanding and evaluating research reports and analyzing short stories or essays. Students will use readings to generate material for writing assignments in the corequisite EASL 0474.
Course Content

-                      articles from popular periodicals (such as Psychology Today, Discover, Sports Illustrated)

-                      textbook material from a variety of subject areas

-                      articles and chapters from academic books (other than textbooks).

-                      theoretical and research articles from professional journals

-                      short stories.

Learning Activities

The instructor will facilitate, observe and evaluate students’ development of reading ability.  Whole and small group instruction will be combined with individual assistance and student-directed learning.  Students will receive assistance with reading difficulties that arise from lack of familiarity with the structure, lexicon and cultural content of the reading passages.

Means of Assessment

This course is a college preparatory course and students will be marked on a MASTERY basis. 

Mastery will be granted to students who achieve over 70% on a series of in-class and out-of-class assessments.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

 

  1. maintain/improve skills learned in EASL 0164, 0264 and 0364.

 

  1. follow information and ideas in extended reading selections from a variety of sources: popular periodicals, textbooks, academic books and professional journals.

a)                   understand development and organization of information and ideas

b)                   summarize, analyze and evaluate information and ideas

c)                   use information and ideas in essays and research papers assigned in the corequisite EASL 0474.

 

  1. understand short stories

a)                   summarize plot

b)                   critically analyze story elements

c)                   use story elements in essays assigned in the corequisite EASL 0474.
