Overview

Course Description
This course with its corequisite EASL 0344 is the third in a series of combined listening and speaking courses. This course is for students who wish to upgrade their conversational and speaking skills in order to continue their education or improve their employment opportunities. Students will improve their ability to communicate in a variety of increasingly complex settings, especially in problem situations. They will also develop formal group discussion and leadership skills, and prepare and make formal presentations. Through these activities, students will continue to develop language skills and improve fluency.
Course Content

Communicative Situations arising from themes and topics common to EASL 0354 and the corequisite 0344.

  1. a.  language functions, such as reporting, disagreeing, expressed in different ways in a

            variety of settings, especially problem situations.                            

        b. conversational signals, such as interrupting, closing a conversation, especially those

            used in problem situations.

2.  group discussion and leadership strategies.

3.  presentation format and delivery techniques, including the use of rhetoric.

4.  use of register (formal, informal language).

5.  cultural appropriateness (communicating in accordance with cultural expectations).

6.  language skills (grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, pronunciation).

Learning Activities

The instructor will facilitate, observe and evaluate students' participation in communicative activities.  Whole and small group instruction will be combined with individual assistance and student directed learning.  Students will participate in the setting of goals by identifying their communicative and language development needs, and will participate in the selection of learning activities.

Means of Assessment

This course is a college preparatory course and students will be marked on a MASTERY basis.  Mastery will be granted to students who achieve over 70% on a series of in-class and out-of-class assessments.

Learning Outcomes

Within relevant educational, employment, personal and social contexts, students will:

1.  communicate in a variety of settings, especially in problem situations.

2.  participate in formal discussions, including leading short group discussions.

3.  prepare and make short presentations.

4.  use formal and informal language appropriately.

5.  communicate in culturally appropriate ways.

6.  express themselves comprehensibly.
