Lawrence Becker

I have been teaching at Douglas College for over three decades.  Prior to that I worked at Red Deer College, a counselling clinic in Calgary, and lived/worked in Old Massett on Haida Gwaii.  My interests at that time involved learning about Indigenous perspectives to education and working with families involved in the child welfare system.  Reducing cross-cultural barriers and helping families with parenting and other issues was a focus to my work. 

At Douglas College I am involved primarily with teaching the counselling, seniors, and substance use classes.  Input from colleagues, students, and clients have been invaluable in the design and delivery of these courses.  Currently I am the Practicum Coordinator for the department and oversee my own students completing agency placements. 

I have been involved in the Uganda Project and other International endeavors.  Additional roles at the college include being the Ombudsperson and Union Steward. 

I worked part-time as a clinical supervisor at a substance misuse clinic in the Lower Mainland for almost 12 years.  Forming connections with other service providers, counselling people, and advocating for clients was a central component of this work.
