Learning activities

Students will learn principles and practices of health information classification through a combination of experiential learning, independent study, and instructor feedback.

Course description
This practice-based course provides students with the opportunity to apply health data coding and classification standards using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Canadian Classification of Interventions (CCI). Students will analyze and apply coding guidelines in acute care facilities or through simulation.
Course content
  • Classification of diseases and interventions from a variety of acute care patient records
  • Application of classification guidelines, in compliance with CIHI standards
  • Collection and presentation of health data in acute care settings
Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze documented health information for acute care patients;
  • Apply disease and intervention coding principles in accordance with Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) standards;
  • Demonstrate data collection and capture using an electronic data abstract;
  • Analyze data integrity and the impact on data classification; and
  • Apply basic pharmacology principles to facilitate data classification.
Means of assessment

Assessment will be based on course objectives andwill be carried out in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course.

This is a Mastery graded course. All assignments must be completed to pass the course.

Textbooks and materials are to be purchased by students.  A list of required textbooks and materials is provided for students at the beginning of the semester.

HIMP 2110 and HIMP 2210 and BIOL 2200

Students in the PBD-HIM program are required to maintain a minimum grade of 65% (C+) in all courses in order to progress in the program.
