Learning Activities

The student will be placed in 2 work or training situations related to career/job choices which are identified in career exploration. Prior to each work experience placement, the student is to demonstrate appropriate work habits that will lead to success in their work experience. In each situation, the student works according to the policies and procedures of that particular work setting.  Whenever skill level permits the student will undertake tasks as assigned by the work supervisor, the student should also be prepared for some periods of observation, and to ask questions to learn more about the nature and variety of employment options in that work place.

Students will be monitored in their work place by the instructor.  According to individual student need coaching and accommodations will also be available.  Feedback will be elicited from the work place supervisor and shared with the student, verbally and in writing to support in future direction.

Following the work placement, students will evaluate their own performance and develop strategies to improve work habits, or make work adjustments as needed.  An assessment will also be made at this time of the appropriateness of the career choice.

Course Description
This course is designed to provide students with learning difficulties or barriers to education and employment with on the job experience related to their career goals. This placement will provide experience in two different work or training environments related to career/job choices. Students will test their ideas, gather information and gain exposure to work sites. Students are also expected to demonstrate and practice appropriate work habits.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the sucessful student will be able to:

1.    Identify and demonstrate safe work practices as per WorkSafe BC Guidelines. 

2.    Identify and evaluate safe and unsafe work sites. 

3.    Complete a minimum of one work experience in an identified job, based on interests, skills and abilities when applicable. 

4.    Plan transportation to participate in an interview and work placement, as required. 

5.    Set goals and participate in evaluations. 

6.    Demonstrate good workplace habits and positive attitudes. 

7.    Plan and complete tasks per instruction. 

8.    Demonstrate an understanding of the behavioural expectations an employer has when looking for a potential employee. 

9.    Participate in verbal and non-verbal feedback. 

10.  Follow instructions and directions, written and verbal. 

11.  Demonstrate good organizational skills and workplace habits. 

12.  Demonstrate initiative, dependability and reliability on the job. 

13.  Recognize the importance of accepting feedback and criticism. 

14.  Present themselves at job interviews in a professional manner. 

15.  Respond to interview skills by representing their strengths. 

16. Ask relevant questions of potential employers. 

17.  Respond to different forms of feedback positively, considering the information to support positive changes. 

18.  Employ appropriate conversational skills with fellow students, coworkers and employers. 

19.  Understand the responsibility of asking for assistance on the job. 

20.  Demonstrate organizational skills (eg: use planning tools, follow schedules, maintain punctuality and attendance). 

Means of Assessment

Evaluation will take place in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. A mastery model of on-going evaluation will be used.  A student will have completed the course when they have:

  1. actively participated in at least one work placement.
  2. demonstrated appropriate work habits.
  3. been actively involved in feedback sessions which includes written and verbal evaluation process.
  4. demonstrated a willingness to implement identified steps towards improving work habits as necessary.
  5. completed at least one work placement report.
