The Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice gets an empowering twist as its traditionally passive heroine is given a rich inner life and the power to shape her own fate.
Directed by acclaimed theatre artist Kathleen Duborg, Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice reimagines this timeless love story, transforming Eurydice into a complex character with her own agency and desires outside of her husband’s.
As she navigates the underworld, she reunites with her late father and faces a choice: stay with him or return to Earth with Orpheus. Unlike the classic tale, which traps Eurydice in the underworld after Orpheus doubts the gods’ promise to bring her back to him, this adaptation puts the final decision in her hands.
The production blends humour, ingenious plot twists and breathtaking visual effects to portray the nuances of love, loss and human behaviour.
"The set visually transports the audience to the underworld, with the Greek chorus, made up of three talking stones, serving as a framing device for Eurydice's journey," said Duborg. “The script is evocative and poetic, exploring the duality of meaning, the duality of place and the magic of relationships, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the bonds that connect us."
The seven-member cast includes Aryanna Scheirer, Keita Okazaki, Maksim Kim, Liana Angst, Irving Rodriguez Garcia, Zander Williams and Ava Lilley.
Presented by the departments of Theatre and Stagecraft & Event Technology, Eurydice opens Nov. 6 at 7:30pm at the New Westminster Campus’s Douglas College Theatre. For tickets and more information, visit douglascollege.ca/arts-events.
