Take the fast track to professional bookkeeping with Douglas College’s new applied accounting program

In just five courses, students will gain the basic skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in bookkeeping or an entry-level accounting role through Douglas College’s new Certificate in Applied Accounting.

This program provides students with relevant and practical knowledge in accounting software, including QuickBooks, Sage and Excel, so they’ll graduate ready to enter the job market or continue their education at Douglas and beyond.

“Students graduating from Douglas College are job-ready, prepared to work in the accounting world and excited to take on new challenges,” says Richard Wong, Accounting Department Chair. “With courses that touch upon data analytics, Quickbooks and applied auditing software, students gain hands-on experience in a short period of time.”

This 15-credit program offers flexible part-time or full-time options, so students can complete the certificate at a pace that fits their schedule. Online and evening courses are also offered, allowing students the opportunity to work while they study.

While this program is designed for students who want to dip their toes into the accounting field, it is also an opportunity for those wishing to enrich their existing career path or pivot to a new one.

Graduates from this program can continue to build their skills by obtaining QuickBooks Certification. This program also seamlessly transfers into the Diploma in Accounting or the Bachelor of Business Administration at Douglas, opening doors to even more employment opportunities.

“To be a good business leader, you need the full breadth of knowledge and skills, and understanding the finances and accounting of a company is one of the most important fundamental skills of running a business,” says Wong.

With more than 9,500 bookkeeping and accounting technician job openings expected in B.C. over the next 10 years, Wong says that employment opportunities are in abundance.

“Every business needs a bookkeeper, so they're always in high demand. When you look at the accounting industry, there are lots of retirements anticipated,” says Wong. “We always say, ‘you've never heard of an unemployed accountant.’”

Applications for the Winter 2024 Semester are open. Those interested in registering for the Certificate in Applied Accounting can apply online through Douglas College’s website.

Douglas College is the largest degree-granting college in B.C., combining the academic foundations of a university and the employer-ready skills of a college to graduate resilient global citizens who adapt, innovate and lead in a changing world.
