Douglas College is the largest college in B.C., combining the academic foundations of a university and the employer-ready skills of a college to graduate resilient global citizens who adapt, innovate and lead in a changing world. In the face of a cost-of-living crisis, our students grapple with financial strain. In particular, those from low-income or first-generation backgrounds face a concerning 89% dropout rate. 

These challenges, including managing multiple jobs, high grocery prices, and exorbitant living expenses, not only hinder academic progress but also severely impact mental well-being, with 40% considering dropping out due to emotional stress. Our ambitious goal is to provide crucial financial support to every Douglas College student, breaking down barriers and fostering a future where education is accessible to all, regardless of financial constraints.

FOCUS: We're tackling financial challenges head-on to support students from all backgrounds to ensure that no student should face obstacles due to financial constraints.

YOUR IMPACT

Access and opportunity 
Provide financial support to every student: Only 8.5% receive financial aid in support of awards, scholarships, or bursaries. By establishing an annual award or an endowment, you are ensuring that students are not turned away because of financial barriers and instead, you are allowing them to do what they love and be good at it.

Emerging and emergency needs 
Ensure that no student is denied an education because of a lack of funds for basic necessities: Alarmingly, 26% of our students reported low or very low food security, underscoring the urgent need to address this issue. You are ensuring that students do receive the fundamental food and wellness necessary for a healthy and effective learning environment.

Reimagining learning and discovery 
Equalize accessibility for all students at the College, enhancing their experience with modern equipment: Reimagining Douglas’s campuses requires continual upgrades to classrooms, labs, equipment, sports facilities, and places for students to learn and study. You are ensuring that students have inspirational spaces to meet and have access to state-of-the-art equipment and the most innovative technologies that do transform the student experience.
