Learning Activities

Communications between instructor and students will be conducted online using the course email, bulletin board and chat utilities.  The instructor will guide the students through a series of learning objectives using motivation and online instruction.  The assigned readings, together with the reinforcement exercises, are the principal learning activities.  Additional materials and resources are available online.

Course Description
This is a BCCampus on-line provincial course. Medical Billing Procedures I will teach the theory for billing of medical services to MSP, ICBC, WCB and other private insurers.
Course Content

The following course content will be covered:

  1. Introduction to billing for medical services
    • Resources (MSP and BCMA)
    • Preamble to the Payment Schedule
    • Guidelines and Protocols
  2. Patient coverage with MSP
  3. Reciprocal coverage (out of province)
  4. Non-insured services
  5. Process of billing to the Medical Services Plan of BC (MSP)
    •  Patient demographic information
    • Physician eligibility
  6. Billing for patient visits
    • Fee codes
    • Daysheet completion and visit coding
  7. Referrals
  8. Billing to ICBC and WCB
Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have reliably demonstrated  the ability to:

  • Access and research the MSP and BCMA websites to retrieve information on guidelines and protocols for the billing of medical services
  • Explain the process of billing to MSP, ICBC, WCB, and other private insurers
  • Identify and use common fee codes for billing for medical services
  • Create daysheets ensuring that all patient information and billing codes are correct
