It is the intent of faculty to facilitate student learning, and promote critical inquiry, reflection and analytical reasoning through a variety of learning processes such as group discussion, decision-making analysis and reflection on practice.

Course Description
In this nursing practice experience, students have opportunities to provide safe, competent, compassionate, and evidence-informed nursing care to individuals with an acute health challenge. The focus is on the client experiencing a surgical intervention. This course builds on using a relational perspective and an ethic of caring in client-centered nursing within the context of family.
Course Content

In this experiential course, nursing practice with clients experiencing acute health challenges and/or surgical interventions are emphasized. Building on previous learning, nursing practice experiences reflect the concepts and essential content from all courses in the semester and the core curriculum concepts.  Nursing practice experiences occur in a variety of surgical settings.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Provide safe, competent, compassionate, and evidence-informed nursing care to individuals with an acute health challenge, including individuals experiencing a surgical intervention.
  • Implement and formulate nursing practice decisions that promote health through critical inquiry, reflection, and analytical reasoning.
  • Demonstrate relational practice skills with clients, families, and other members of the health care team, to promote holistic health and well being.
  • Be active participants in the development of their own knowledge.
  • Identify and recognize leadership behaviours in others.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of leadership that promotes interprofessional collaboration and client-centered care.
Means of Assessment

The course evaluation is consistent with Douglas College Evaluation Policy.  A course evaluation schedule and other course evaluation information are provided on the Instructor’s Course Outline which is available to students at the beginning of each semester.  A nursing practice assessment form is used to guide nursing practice course evaluation.  This form includes indicators of successful nursing practice at the end of the semester.  Nursing practice congruent with these indicators is an essential component of successful completion of this course.  This is a mastery course.

Students in the BSN program are required to maintain a passing grade of 65% (C+) in all courses in order to progress in the program.
