Course Description
Students are introduced to theory and principles pertaining to health information management utilizing the health information management lifecycle as an integrated framework.
Course Content

In this course, the learner will:

  • Explore the stages of the Canadian Health Information Management Lifecycle, focus on the roles and responsibilities of the HIM professional and the HIM department, and focus on the health sector as a whole
  • Explore the governance of health information management including: enterprise information management governance, information governance, data governance, information technology governance and electronic health record governance.  These concepts will be addressed within the framework of the health information management lifecycle.  
  • Explore the organization of the health information management plan, including information models, the classification system framework and clinical document architecture.  Students will be introduced to data sets, data dictionaries and the associated data standards and guidelines.  Integrated with information organization are content and documentation standards.
  • Access, use and disclose health information, and explore the primary and secondary uses of information and privacy controls.
  • Explore the relevant governance principles for the maintenance, retention and protection of health data and information.  This stage includes:  record linkage, standardized chart format, form and content management, record completion, data quality audits, primary, secondary and transitory documents and other key concepts that are related to stage 5 of the HIM lifecycle
  • Explore the disposition and destruction process of health data and information including policies, procedures and legal requirements
Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, successful learners will be able to:

  • Apply the stages of the health information management lifecycle  
  • Demonstrate health information management planning, including governance and accountability frameworks
  • Illustrate data collection, capture and receipt principles, including health data governance, standards and quality components
  • Outline the organization of health information management
  • Demonstrate access, use and disclosure of health information
  • Use maintenance, retention and protection of health information
  • Apply the disposition and destruction of health information
  • Analyze the effectiveness of the stages of the health information management lifecycle
  • Use electronic health record applications to support each learning content area
Means of Assessment

The course evaluation is consistent with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy.  An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course.  This is a graded course.  All assignments must be completed to pass the course.

A list of required and optional textbooks, materials and electronic applications is provided for students at the beginning of each semester.

Prerequisites

Students in the PBD-HIM program are required to maintain a passing grade of 65% (C+) in all courses in order to progress in the program.
