Join the Department of Anthropology and Sociology in celebrating Dr. Dilsora Fozilova's new book! What happens when a state promotes one version of Islam while repressing others? Drawing on a diverse array of material including extensive fieldwork within Uzbekistan, interviews with Uzbeks in the diaspora, and records of asylum seekers preserved by human rights organizations in Europe, Radical Revival examines the complex relationship between Islam and the state in post-Soviet Uzbekistan, revealing how efforts to promote “official Islam” while repressing “unofficial” religious expression produced unintended consequences, including the radicalization of some believers.
This event is open to all.
