Classroom time will be used for experiential learning, practical application, peer teaching, video observation, inquiry-based learning, and lectures. 

Course description
This course focuses on fundamental movement patterns, rhythmic and acrobatic gymnastics, and learners' development of a robust movement vocabulary. Using movement education theory and resources, this course provides students with the knowledge and experience necessary to plan and teach developmental-level gymnastics and/or movement education across various contexts. This course is open to students of all physical abilities. Inclusive approaches to movement education and physical literacy are central themes. Participation in and planning of physical education and health activities are course requirements. This course is open to students of all physical abilities.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Describe appropriate pedagogical strategies for effective, inclusive, and safe instruction of gymnastics and/or movement education for grades K-12;
  • Teach progressions in select gymnastics and/or movement education tasks as they relate to the development of physical literacy;
  • Utilize physical literacy assessments to evaluate progress in gymnastics and other movement education activities;
  • Apply theoretical and practical knowledge of specific safety and risk management concerns associated with teaching gymnastics and/or movement education activities;
  • Create lesson plans and unit plans for teaching developmental-level gymnastics and/or movement education.
Means of assessment

Assessment will be in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. The instructor will present a written course outline with specific evaluation criteria at the beginning of the semester. Evaluation will be based on the following:
