Overview

Course Description
This practical course offers students the opportunity to acquire personal care and assistance skills within the parameters of the HCA role. The course comprises classroom and supervised laboratory experiences. The student will integrate theory from other courses to develop caregiver skills that maintain and promote the comfort, safety, and independence of clients in community and facility contexts.

Course Content
  1. Problem-solving when carrying out caregiving procedures
  2. Asepsis and prevention of infection
  3. Promoting comfort and rest
  4. Promoting personal hygiene
  5. Moving, positioning, and transferring a client
  6. Bedmaking
  7. Promoting exercise and activity
  8. Assisting with dietary intake
  9. Promoting urinary and bowel elimination
Learning Activities

In this course, students will learn clinical procedure skills through a variety of means including lecture, observation, audio-visual aids, demonstration, simulations, and case studies.

Means of Assessment

Assessment will be based on course objectives and will be carried out in accordance with the Douglas College Evaluation Policy. An evaluation schedule is presented at the beginning of the course.

This is a mastery course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Perform personal care skills in an organized manner ensuring the comfort and appropriate independence of the client;
  2. Apply an informed problem-solving process to the provision of care and assistance;
  3. Provide personal care and assistance within the parameters of the HCA role;
  4. Provide care and assistance in ways that maintain safety for self and others in a variety of contexts.
